Ed Zwick is best known for his directorial work on “Glory,” “The Last Samurai,” and “Defiance.” If there’s a consistent theme running through the films, it’s the concept of heroics, people placed into situations where they are forced to muster up their will in the face of adversity. So, who better to produce a short film about heroism (in relation to Sony’s upcoming “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” game)?

Speaking to Empire, Zwick stated that he wasn’t much of a gamer, but he was intrigued by the idea of talking to a number of different people ? all associated with the game in some manner ? and asking them to define what heroism means.

The “Uncharted” franchise ? developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony ? portrays the ongoing adventures of Nathan Drake, a direct descendent of Sir Francis Drake. A third-person action game, “Uncharted” blends shooting with platforming and puzzle solving. The series’ third major release, “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” is releasing for the PlayStation 3 on November 1.

If you’re like Zwick, and the last videogame you played probably involved a yellow ball eating white pellets, just know that the “Uncharted” games are wildly successful. One of the title’s most lauded features is the incredibly cinematic story and character performances woven into the action. Drake is an everyman with an “Indiana Jones” complex; a comparison that runs so deep Sony even put out this delightfully weird commercial starring Harrison Ford in Japan.

Speaking of “Uncharted” movie adaptations, the film is still lacking a director after David O. Russell walked away from the project. For his part, Zwick doesn’t seem too interested.

“Ha, no, that’s not anything I’ve ever given thought to,” he told Empire.

If you haven’t heard this one creeping around the ‘net by now, you’re in for a treat. Last week, “Anonymous” actor Rhys Ifans swung by MTV News HQ to chat about his new Roland Emmerich movie, but didn’t leave without offering up some serious goods on “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Ifans stars in the superhero movie as the villainous Lizard, and he offered us a terrifying taste of what his scaly creature might sound like when the movie hits in 2012.

Phoning It In
“The Avengers” trailer was an impressive feat on many levels, and would have been all the more noteworthy if a report that certain scenes were shot using an iPhone had been true. Sadly, it’s not true, as the “Avengers” director of photography explains in a new interview. Move along, folks!

Punishment Time
Look, I’m all for a “Punisher” television series, but not one that’s going to fundamentally alter the core of Frank Castle. It looks like that’s what we might be in store for, sadly: a “Punisher” TV series is in the works at Fox, and based on the loose plot details we’ve heard thus far, this sounds more like “The New Adventures of Frank Castle” than a true-blue “Punisher” show.

Shades Of Patriotism
“Captain America: The First Avenger” arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday (October 25), and ahead of the film’s release, we’ve got an exclusive look at a behind-the-scenes feature detailing all of Cap’s many different star-spangled looks. Give a watch and dive into Steve Rogers’ various superhero suits!

Singer/guitarist John Mayer has enjoyed a long, Grammy-filled career thanks to his bluesy rasp. But after canceling a series of recent performances to rest his voice, Mayer announced that he had gone under the knife to correct a throat problem that had laid him low.

Mayer was diagnosed with granuloma (throat inflammation) just above his vocal cord last month and has been ordered to take complete vocal rest for at least a month following the surgery.

“I wanted to give you an update on the granuloma just above my vocal cord,” Mayer wrote on his Tumblr. “I had surgery this afternoon to remove it and am now on complete vocal rest for a month or more. It’s been a very long process in waiting to see if time was an alternative to surgery, but even given two weeks’ voice rest (along with many other approaches), there was no change for the better.”

Mayer canceled some performances last month, including an appearance at the first-ever iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas as well as a show with Tony Bennett in Los Angeles. In addition, his upcoming fifth album, Born and Raised, which was originally slated for release this fall, has been pushed back to next year.

“I should be frustrated but I can’t seem to stop thinking about beautiful things,” Mayer continued. “I never thought I’d be wishing I could do what I love again; I stay in at night, picking guitar parts off of records and dreaming of playing on the big stage. The only difference between now and when I was 18 is that now I have this beautiful, meaningful record waiting for me when I can sing it.”
